Easy flower to grow

The easiest flowers to grow in Malaysia, which I experienced are: the Japanese rose, hibiscus (popular in Malaysia as bunga raya) and orchids.

My small flower garden have the orchids, hibiscus, Japanese rose and a few more rare plants such as: Red rose which I brought from my country, the Yasmin flower, petunia and Ipomoea quamoclit (cypress vine).

I noticed that these flowers can grow good in Malaysia, especially the Japanese rose, all the year full of flowers and they grow very fast with little good care, water and fertilizer. They need the sun light. The flowers color can relax your eyes.

Hibiscus (bunga raya) are also growing everywhere in Malaysia and they can flourish under hot sun but my hibiscus are flowering more during the rainy season.

Orchids are my first attempt in growing them but seems so far so good. I am looking forward to see my first orchid flowering.

I plan to add a few more cactus plants to my flowers garden.

Chili paste - Sambal belacan

One of popular dishes and must have dishes when eating rice with fish is the chili paste - sambal belacan.

Most Malaysian considers sambal belacan as a must to go with their normal rice servings.

Sambal belacan comes in various recipes. Today I am going to share with you my simple sambal belacan I make for my husband.

Ingredients:

20 fresh red chilies
2 green lime
Half spoon salt
Half spoon sugar
Half spoon prawn paste (belcan)
20 g mineral water

The red chilies are cut in small pieces and pounded to be paste like. I use a stone mortar and pestle to pound them, giving you a feeling of a traditional dish. Nowadays people use the electric blender.

Once the chili paste is formed add the remaining ingredients and mix well. The paste is kept in refrigerator and can last for 1-2 weeks.

Gardening

I always used to grow flowers and some important herbs for my cooking, but this year seems more favorable despite of the heat wave (El Nino) currently experienced in Malaysia for the past 2 months.

I have 2 small gardens in my front yard which caters for flowers, and at the back of house which consists mostly of herbs.  Because of the dry season in Malaysia and the heat wave (El Nino) the plants seem to struggle to survive. I water them twice a day but the insect and pest seems more to enjoy them at present, but thank God all under control with anti-insects spray, and some fertilizers.

This year I spend more money on taking care of the plants and even the water bill increased. Hopefully by end of April the weather will be back to normal and the rain season will come.

The heat wave (El Nino) affected drastically the rice planting season, which is delayed due to no rain for the past 2-3 months.

Also mango and durian plantation suffers due to the heat wave.

Not only the plants but even the humans are affected. I had never experience anything like this in my 10 years in Malaysia, so hot like now, which is continuing with no rain.

In Alor Setar, 3 times the school closed due to the high temperatures of 37 C continuously for 3 days.

Every landscape in the city seems yellow and dried.

Herbs and vegetables

I enjoy cooking for my family and I love to use my home grown herbs and vegetables from my small garden.

After my relocation to Malaysia, I was exposed to more herbs and vegetables, which I take as a bonus in my knowledge and started to eat more vegetables and herbs.

My favorite vegetables in my country was tomato, cucumber, pepperoni, radish, egg plants and broccoli and we have the chance to enjoy them during summer and autumn seasons only.

In Malaysia you can enjoy the vegetables all year long.

My dream is just to open my kitchen door, step in my herbs garden and pluck whichever plant I want, which already I started to work on and continuing to add more varieties to it.

Some of my vegetables and herbs that I grow in my graden are: Green small lime, Lime Tree (Pokok Limau Purut), Curry, Cosmos caudatus (Ulam Raja), Ulam, Salad, Green bean, Chilli, Lemon grass (Serai),  Vietnamese mint (Daun kesom), Peppermint (Pudina), Thai Basil (Daun kemangi) and Chinese broccoli (Kailan).

I also have fruit plants such as raspberry ( brought here from my country)  mulberry, and mango.
